Across the globe, headlines surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic dominate news headlines. As initiatives are being undertaken to minimize the spread of the virus, social distancing is rapidly being implemented to prevent the current pandemic from worsening. In these uncertain times, it remains even more crucial for us to come together as a community to support one another (from a safe distance in a digital world), especially as the lack of social contact can lead to an increase in loneliness and isolation.

Studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness can take a toll on the body, and have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health. With technology at our fingertips, how can we change the way we interact with social platforms to cultivate new social habits (and our social-wellbeing)?

These are some apps that can help keep us connected to each other to combat loneliness:

  • Whatsapp, Facetime, (Insert your preferred group chat app): Fall back in love with group chats. Use this medium to call your friends, colleagues, relatives, and even neighbors to check in on how they are.
  • QuarantineChat: A voice-app that allows users to chat with other people around the world who are confined to their homes — without requiring the need for phone numbers.
  • HearMe: A free on-demand peer support app to counter the effects of loneliness. The service puts trained volunteers on standby, allowing app users to connect with an empathetic ear. The listeners on the other end of the line are trained to understand what the social media user is experiencing at the moment.
  • Wisdo: A social networking app intended to improve mental well-being and tackle loneliness. The app connects people with similar struggles and experiences together to support each other and share advice.
  • ShineText: A self-care app that’s helping make self-care a daily habit. This app brings a community together with daily support for anxiety and stress through daily meditations paired with motivational messages and self-care programs.

The next few weeks will be difficult for many of us. During these times, if we make the effort to stay connected, we can make a big difference to people who are feeling alone at this time. What tools are you using to combat loneliness?
